It’s the little things

Hello everyone. And Happy Independance day!

I recently spent a couple of days out of town on a ” girls getaway” with my sister. We decided on a resort and spa on A beautiful lake in northern Wisconsin. We had been planning this trip away for quite a while, and , it goes without saying, we were looking forward to time away and some R&R. The resort and spa looked amazing on the website, and, we justified spending a bit more to have a pampered and comfortable stay.

I wont lie, I am a bit picky. I work in an amazing spa, that I’ve always had the best treatments and I have high expectations because of this. Also, I , like most people, don’t want to spend my hard earned money needlessly.

We checked in at the resort, and went immediately to the spa. It was beautiful. We were given a tour and a form to ascertain our preferences and any important medical information. We were given lockers with cozy robes and slippers and shown to a luxurious relax room.

The treatments and amenities were fabulous and were worth every penny. I was impressed, and that’s a big compliment.

Unfortunately , my bubble would soon burst.

We got to our room, opened the door, and were immediately back in 1972. It was awful. Dirty carpet, No amenities, furniture I think I had as a child, and a bathroom the size of a closet. No coffee, tea or water. No microwave. Children running up and down the halls all night. A/C that barely worked and was probably originally put in in the 50’s .

This entire experience made me think about the little things. All of the small positive things that make for a great experience. How, after a fabulous experience in the spa, it was all ruined by the room.

I think as a consumer, who works hard , you should get what you pay for. And, if you do, it’s important to let the business know that they are hitting the nail on the head.

I gave a glowing review, both to the spa and yelp, for the awesome spa experience. I also filled out a survey letting the resort know where they are not excelling, and why I was disappointed.

Hopefully, they will take my opinion to heart and make necessary action. And, hopefully, the spa manager will praise their employees for a job well done.

As for me, I will always try to remember the little things and continue to serve my guest the best way I can.

To Good to be true

I wanted to speak on the subject of “quick fix” fat loss treatments. It has become a very popular thing springing up all over… from spas to cosmetic surgeons offices and everywhere in between. Treatments like thermage, cool sculpting, true sculpt, … are an attractive choice for people who want to spot reduce fat with no work, and no downtime.

I can’t say whether or not these treatments are effective or not, but I do have some skepticism. My doubts come from what I feel are some logical questions.

#1, if these treatments are THAT amazing and effective, why is there not a line out the door and a mile long waiting list?

#2, If this is a permanent fat loss solution, why are these treatments so reasonably priced? I would think it would cost a lot more than 1k for that kind of miracle.

#3, Would you even have to advertise this at all, much less constantly?Wouldn’t word of mouth be enough?

#4, why are your “before” pictures a pasty white, unmade up , frowning face gal and the “after” pictures a tanned, made over, smiling and glamorous gal?

Like I said before, I do not have personal experience with these treatments, and can not deny their claims, but I encourage all of you to educate yourselves before spending your hard earned money on things that could be ” to good to be true”.  As for me, I’ll still be hitting the gym💪🏼🏋🏼‍♀️

Have a great day!

Xoxo, Jen

Sun, Fun and SPF with Felicity

Hello Friends!

May is skin cancer awareness month, so I’d like to introduce an amazing Skin care professional from Antons, Felicity. She is going to explain and introduce you to some sun care products, and tips.

Hi All!! I am a little nutty when it comes to SPF, it is the best protective device that we have when it comes to preventing skin cancer as well as aging! The sun accounts for over 80% of the effects of aging. That’s right, a majority of those fine lines, dehydration, and pesky spots(i.e. melasma, dark/brown spots, freckles) are caused from the sun. The great news is we have a way of preventing more dark spotting and wrinkling from occurring, for mature skin; we also have a way to protect younger skin from ever acquiring some of those as well. What is this “miracle in a bottle”, you ask? S. P. F.—or Sun Protection Factor.

Sunscreen History

1940’s—sun protection is believed to be developed, with a walloping SPF 2.

1960’s—commercial SPF comes to the market. Let’s not get too excited, it was very minimal and had very little effectiveness.

1970’s—FDA develops labeling for SPF based on it’s effectiveness. Meanwhile, everyone is just lobstering, happily, with baby oil.

1980’s—more research defines UVA and UVB rays. UVA-aging rays-are skin-cancer “promotors”, while UVB-burning rays-are what initiate skin cancer. 😳😖😤

1990’s—with the newest info regarding UV rays, ingredients protecting against UVA are added to commercial products. The term “broad-spectrum” becomes more widely used. If only there were more broad-spectrum things in life!

2000’s—sunscreen and SPF are continually being improved, studied, and regulated. 👙season, here we come!!

As you can see, SPF is something we will constantly be perfecting. What we DO know, is that we must do all in our power to protect our largest organ: the skin. One thing we, as estheticians, hear all the time when we ask clients about their sun protection on a daily basis is, “I have SPF in my moisturizer.” This is great! It means you are aware of the dangers and are actively doing something about it. But, what about as you go about the day? And to that question the answer is *usually* …crickets… Your skin is an organ that is working throughout the day, it doesn’t even get a lunch break folks. It will gradually metabolize (or ‘eat’) the sunscreen as it works. It eats while working, it doesn’t whistle while working. However, considering the huge task of holding all your insides *in*, while simultaneously protecting us from all the germs we encounter daily, we are going to allow that minor munching on the job.

REAPPLICATION of sunscreen is PARAMOUNT TO PREVENTION. Imagine sunscreen like an umbrella that is made of paper that only lasts for about 2 hours then dissolves into nothing, and all you are left with is unsightly wires, and in water the umbrella-paper dissolves even faster! OMG-what to do, what to do. Slap on s’mora that sunscreen baby! Every 2 hours for general activities while outdoors, and every 1-1/2 hours when swimming, sweating, or wiping consistently. This doesn’t mean a “dime-size” amount will do. It is recommended(for adults) to use 1 full ounce (a shot-glass full, for all my Wisconsinites 😉) EVERY TIME you apply. So that 10-ounce bottle that lasts your family of 5 a month, is just not cutting it. A 10-ounce bottle should last ONE AVERAGE ADULT about 20 hours, of general activities, not swimming or sweating, etc. I don’t know about you, but I definitely spend well over 20 hours, outside, in the sun, between May and September. Or, as in my case, in Wisconsin, the moment it gets above 40 degrees, to moment it dips below 40 degrees. It’s for real, ask anyone.

What are we “protecting” our skin from? UV rays of course! But, what does “burning” or “lobstering” mean, other than *a great tan*? The reason your skin turns red is because it is actually being burned…from the inside out, by UV radiation. Your skin wants to protect you at all times (isn’t that so sweet? 💐💝), so when it is exposed to something it views as a threat it sends in the soldiers to assess the situation and call for back-up if needed. They are feverishly working to produce dark pigmentation to provide a barrier. They are working so hard they use up all the water in the skin leaving it feeling tight. A few days go by and your skin has that “exotic” look, well, after all the peeling-or loss of the brutally burned skin cells. This tanning process is actually damaging the DNA of your cells. When there is too much destruction to the cell, over time, they could be damaged to the point that the skin can no longer provide protection and cancer gets free reign over those cells that have no way to protect themselves. In some cases there can be enough damage that the spout that provides the melanin or “tan” can be permanently turned on or off leaving us with white or dark spots.

A few other “fun facts” for you about sunscreen:

• “Waterproof”, “Sweat-proof”, and “Sunblock” no longer apply. No SPF can block out 100% of the sun’s damaging UV rays, or stop water from penetrating, or slow the skin’s munching. What we can say about Sunscreen is that it is “water-resistant” or “very water-resistant” while “screening” a certain percentage of UV.

• There is a difference between “physical” and “chemical” sunscreens. Physical-provides a barrier that bounces the rays off of you. Chemical-works by absorbing the rays that enter the skin and eliminating them from the body. This accounts for why most physical sunscreens are difficult to rub in, versus chemical sunscreens.

• As of 2014, the FDA has capped sunscreens at 50+ due to decades of study and new understandings of how sunscreen provides protection.

•SPF 2 will protect against ~50% of UVB rays

•SPF 10 will protect against ~85% of UVB rays

•SPF 15 will protect against ~95% of UVB rays

•SPF 30 will protect against ~97% of UVB rays

•Above SPF 30 the advanced protection is very minimal, however it will still provide a lengthy amount of protection against lobstering, when applied correctly.

There is still so much we are constantly learning about the Sun and it’s effects on the skin. Some things can be reversed with wintertime peels and using the right products on that gorgeous organ!! Powder sunscreen is something new to the table that women LOVE!!

So, along with keeping that face/skin gorgeous and cancer-free, Colorescience has many products that allow us to: keep looking fabulous, absorb surface oils, protect those areas we forget (part lines, scalp, ears, back of the neck, etc.) and it’s quick and can be done one-handed…moms…

Anton’s has multiple products in multiple price ranges to accommodate everyone. End Lobstering Now!! We offer treatments and products to help correct, protect from, and reverse signs of aging associated with the sun. One such product called “Even Up” brightens and evens out skin tone, while correcting and reversing dark pigments on the skin, AND provides a physical protection of SPF 50! It has a similar feel to makeup primer and has a gentle tint to immediately even out tone, making it perfect for use under your makeup. Another benefit of physical sunscreens, which include all Colorescience products, is they are typically made with pure minerals that will not clog pores!

Stop in to ask any one of our fabulous and educated estheticians about future skin treatments and what are the right protective products for you and that beautiful, yet hungry, skin!

Paying it forward

Good Afternoon everyone!

I just returned from a trip to Texas, near Houston and of course, came across a bunch of Texan/ JJ Watt fans.
One thing they all had in common, was the fact that, instead of talking about his athletic ability, they praised him for charitable nature. They talked about what he does to support Houston, and how much he gives back to the community.
Whether it’s your time, or financially, nothing feels better than giving back, supporting and helping people.
I’m blessed to work for a company that recognizes the importance of supporting those in need. This weekend Anton’s is sponsoring a bike race called Project Echelon that benefits military veterans and their families. For more info.
That , along with Woman’s shelters, children’s charities, local police and fire fighters…
Anton’s also offers a significant military discount on services and retail at all times. Just present your Id to the front desk upon checkout.
The point is, giving feels good, and what goes around , comes around. We are always interested to hear about the needs of the community, so, don’t hesitate to ask.
In the meantime, check out the bike race this weekend in Downtown Delafield. Details are on the website and our Facebook page.
Have a great day! XOXO Jen

Buyer beware

This is the question of the day. So many times professional hairstylists will use products during a service, and explain the benefits and recommended usage, only for a client to walk out the door empty handed and buy it elsewhere. I would like to explain why NOT to do this.

When you purchase professional hair care( or skin care) products from outside of a salon/spa environment, there are no guarantees that these products are what they say they are. This is diversion. No representative from these companies are allowed to sell outside of a professional salon setting. Most likely these products are old, outdated, or simply FAKES. And, in some cases stolen. Diverted products can be the real thing, but they can also be counterfeit, diluted formulas, or old, expired formulas that may not be safe/effective to use. Products are diverted by unauthorized distributors and salons or their employees, plus other dishonest individuals who see profit in piracy. Diverted stock goes through additional layers of distribution where product integrity might be compromised by adverse environmental conditions. When you buy a product from Anton’s, or other salons, that product is guaranteed!

Our suppliers ONLY sell products directly to professional salons/licensed cosmetologists/licensed technicians. Manufacturers (like Aveda/Pureology/Moroccanoil/Kevin Murphy)will only guarantee their products if they are purchased at an authorized retailer, like us. Many of our suppliers require us to sign an agreement, promising that we will not sell professional salon and skincare products to unauthorized retailers, for a profit.

Unauthorized Online Retailers (like Amazon): Many consumers are lured into buying professional salon and skincare products through unauthorized, online retailers because of attractive price points. Similar to unauthorized diverted products in big box stores, products purchased online carry an added risk to the consumer because packaging/tampering/and product condition cannot be inspected before purchasing. Has the bottle been opened? Is the packaging old, damaged, or counterfeit? Online sources have products that have been passed through uncontrolled distribution channels and may be counterfeit, diluted formulas, old, expired and not safe to use.

There are many anecdotal and many “more formal” investigative news stories about counterfeit and dangerous professional salon, makeup, and skincare products, purchased online. Investigative news outlets have documented instances where products are expired, contaminated, or simply made with counterfeit ingredients that do not at all resemble “the real product”. In some cases, these fake products contained dangerous levels of lead and other harmful chemicals. Knock-off products are becoming more prevalent in the professional beauty industry and present a clear risk for the consumer.

Can online products be the real thing? The answer is yes, but how do you know? If you want to purchase online, consider the risks of purchasing products that may not be what you expect.

Is it the cost that concerns you? Yes, professional products are an investment. The reason for this , they are made of high quality ingredients, have been safely and humanly tested, and are guaranteed. It is important to note, just because it’s available at a retail store or online doesn’t mean it’s a better deal. Many times it is the same or even a higher price,  without  a guarantee.

Remember that professional salon and skincare manufacturers will only guarantee products purchased from an authorized retailers – like us!

Thank you for taking the time to read and understand how this is a hot topic for professionals, like myself. Not only do we pride ourselves on our service and skills, but , also in the products we use and recommend. Have a great day, and Happy Spring!

Great Deal

Hey Friends! Check out this deal!

This week’s’s Half Off Deal is a $50 gift card to Anton’s Salon & MSpa located in Pewaukee and Delafield. Listen to Jake and Tanner, Friday at 9 a.m. when this great deal goes on sale. Check it out!

What’s the difference?

Its been a fun and enlightening season of “lessons” for our stylists. Educators from all over the world , from all different companies, come to Anton’s and give classes on many aspects of our industry. We have welcomed experts from Skinbetter Science, Colorscience, Goldwell, Morrocan oil, Keratin Complex, and Redken, just to name a few.

One topic of conversation that came up during a skill class on color placement, was, If our clients know the difference between Ombré, balayage, baby lights, …. and, if not, how do we determine what they are looking for and hoping to achieve?

Of course, as professionals, we, your stylists, will consult with you and decide what is the right color technique for your needs, but, in the interest of being an educated client, here is a brief break down of these techniques.

An Ombré color is when the color goes from being darkest to lightest gradually. Usually , a full application of color on the entire head. This was very popular in the past 5 years, and is becoming a bit outdated.

A balayage technique takes the place of Ombre. It is a softer look and is a hand painted technique to give a smooth , yet textured look.

Baby lights are very similar to balayage, but a bit softer, finer and very subtle. This is ideal for someone who is new to color, or just looking for a slight brightening , as if they were in the sun for a day.

Hopefully, this will give you enough information to make a good choice, and have better communication with your stylist.

Have a great March, and Happy St Pattys day!

Yes to Keratin!

Good morning!

Today our stylists are busy perfecting the technique of Keratin treatment services. Have you wondered if these treatments are right for you? Well, here is a bit of information about this service.

What is keratin?
Keratin is a protein and the major component in skin, hair and nails; in fact, the hair is mainly comprised of keratin-associated proteins. Keratin acts both as an external protective protein in the cuticle (the outer layers of a hair strand) and as an internal structural protein in the cortex (the inner core of the hair that helps determine its strength).

Keratin is depleted when hair is damaged physically, chemically and/or from environmental factors, such as the sun. This keratin loss exposes the hair’s cortex, making it susceptible to additional damage, and causes porous spots to develop—much like potholes in a road. Replenishing lost keratin helps to correct porosity and smooth the hair’s surface. It restores strength and elasticity, giving the hair a more youthful, healthy appearance.

What is unique about Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy?
The innovative technology in our Smoothing Therapy treatments binds keratin to the hair. This process helps prevent humidity from penetrating the hair, thus locking out frizz. In addition, Keratin Complex Color Therapy incorporates this signature keratin technology into the hair-coloring process, which helps to make the hair stronger and smoother as it undergoes a color transformation.

Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy is different. Conventional straighteners or relaxers may break the protein bonds within the hair’s structure, causing each strand to reform into a permanently straight shape.

Keratin Complex’s revolutionary technology does not break the hair’s bonds, instead delivering the versatility of smoother, healthier-looking hair that can be styled wavy or straight as desired.

Keratin Complex’s signature keratin works effectively on all hair types. Our unique Smoothing Therapy treatments contain high concentrations of keratin that penetrate throughout the hair structure, and then are sealed within the cortex to repair damage.
